People trapped on drifting ice in Lake Simcoe

Provincial police have been called to the bottom of the 4th Line of Oro-Medonte where numerous people are trapped on a floating piece of ice.
Emergency helicopters were brought in to airlift approximately 24 people off a large chunk of ice drifting farther out into Lake Simcoe.
"They're on a piece of ice that's broken away and it's drifting," Sgt. Peter Leon said said. "It would appear it's an ice-floe situation."
"There were people in the water, as well as on the ice flow, and we are attempting rescue, as we speak," said Barrie Fire Chief John Lynn, whose firefighters are there, at about 1 p.m.
Lynn also said CFB Trenton's search and rescue team is on its way. He said travel time is about one hour.
Patty Phillips called police when she spotted the large group of people and two four-wheelers drifting in the dangerous waters.
"It looks pretty dangerous because the water is really moving here and these people are stranded on ice that's moving," she said. "We're standing here watching the helicopter trying to lift people off the ice."
Phillips watched from her 5th Line home as the helicopter removed between two to four people at a time.
"You hear about all the time and I've been seeing it for days that there has still been people going out on that ice," she said. "You could see them. Right now we see a couple of dozen people still out there."

People are being airlifted to safety and transported to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie for assessment.
OPP and fire crews were first called around 11:30 a.m., after Phillips spotted the stranded group.
Innisfil emergency crews were called to the bottom of Big Bay Point Road in preparation of the ice drifting farther out into lake.

Вот и выдался случай реализовать предложение Вадима:   

Сижу себе вчера вечером, никого не трогаю, примуса починяю. Ну работаю в смысле. Вдруг - звонок. Звонит Олег. Типа какие планы на завтра. Ну понятное дело, что планы на завтра резко изменились 

Были с Сашей на Kempenfelt bay. Ну а где ещё?  Всё бы ничего, но синоптики проиграли в рулетку и вместо обещанного более-менее мягкого утра мы получили вот такое вот безобразие.

Догадываясь, что будет происходить на единственном замёрзшем глубоководном пятачке Симко, мы решили не толпиться, а попробовать распечатать одно из озёр ближней Маскоки. Зимой мы там никогда ещё не бывали, да и само озеро как-то выпало из сферы внимания широкой общественности. А тут ещё и морозец с ветром в прогнозе. Так что лучше куда-нибудь, где есть шанс хоть от ветра как-то спрятаться. Вобщем, поехали на разведку.
